Knowing when a copperhead snake is around - It is virtually impossible to know when a copperhead snake is around unless you see the animal for yourself. Copperheads are easily distinguished by their bulbous heads with reddish coloration. They will be drawn to water, as most snakes are, so monitor any standing reservoirs around the home. Another way to determine the size of a suspected snake would be to positively identify snake droppings. This can be very difficult to do. The fecal material will likely be very moist if it is fresh. A snake as large as a copperhead will show evidence of mammal remains like teeth, bones, and nails in the excrement. If there are other species of large snakes in your area, there will be no way to positively say the poop is from a copperhead. If you live in a place where there are copperheads, you should adapt your lifestyle to reflect that truth. Just assume there is a copperhead when you are working around the home. Be extra wary and diligent; wear high boots and gloves. If you’re worried, you can set up snake traps around the lawn. These glue traps have rodent scent lures inside. They work every well for venomous snakes.

Just had to thank you. Your website is the absolute most comprehensive, intetesting, and usable info on the net. And I needed it. I'm a 60 year old grandmother who keeps my precious 2 year old granddaughter several days a week just to play together. We have a creek behind our home here in Joilet IL and snakes seem to love to come up here every spring to have their babies. We then have to deal with dozens and dozens of baby snakes, who seemed like massive monsters to us of course, and we are quite afraid of them. they seem to like to be under our air conditioner unit which is right outside my back door that opens to the deck. I also have a small garden there. We do also get the occasional really large ones and they are terrifying. Anyway, I just wanted you to know that your info, your website is very important to many of us and I thank you very much David. Blessings, Heidy
